Residence on Gaspar Becerra Street (Casa D. Antonio Machado)

PLACE OF INTEREST

Description

Antonio Machado's salary as a professor did not allow him to spend much money, so he soon had to leave the Comercio hotel and look for rented accommodation. First he rents a house to live with his mother on Prado de la Cárcel Street (today Pasaje del Cardenal Benavides), but he finds it dilapidated and cold, so he moves to another one, although more modest, he finds it more comfortable and bright. An adjacent house on the same street, which was on the corner of Gaspar Becerra Street, from where Machado can see the Plateresque doorway of the old prison, today Baeza Town Hall. He lived there, alone or temporarily accompanied by members of his family, until his move to Segovia in 1919. Currently there is a mosaic (Cardenal Benavides Passage) and a plaque (Gaspar Becerra Street) that remember the poet's presence in this house.
