Description

Museum that collects various relics and other memories that were related to the life and work of San Juan de la Cruz, as well as a tour of his life and his doctrine. The museum also has a notable library specialized in San Juan topics and spirituality. It is the only one in the world dedicated to his figure, it was inaugurated in 1978 in the premises of the San Miguel de los Carmelitas Descalzos convent, where the mystical poet went to be cured of the “fever fevers”: (...) "I received here in La Peñuela the sheet of letters that the servant brought me. I am very careful. Tomorrow I am going to Úbeda to cure some cold sores, which, (since they have been giving me every day for more than eight days and do not go away) it seems to me that I will need medical help" (...).On September 28, 1591, Fray Juan de la Cruz arrived at the convent of Úbeda to "cure some feverish fevers." Here he remained until his death in a poor cell in this convent. It is the definitive encounter with the Beloved, at twelve at night between December 13 and 14, Brother Juan goes "to sing matins in heaven." That verse he wrote has come true: "break the fabric of this sweet encounter." From that moment on, the convent of Úbeda became a focus that radiated the spirituality of the barefoot Carmelite mystic. The religious of this community always opened their doors to all those who came to know the unique figure of Fray Juan. Finally, in 1978 the Museo San Juan de la Cruz was inaugurated, collecting various relics and other memories that were related to the Saint, as well as preparing a tour of his life and doctrine for the visitor. It was also enriched with a notable library specialized in San Juan topics and spirituality. In the Jubilee Year 2000 the Museum underwent an important renovation, increasing with a large number of works from the convents of the Province of Santo Ángel Custodio de Andalucía. In this way, the Museum currently has twelve rooms where the visitor can come to know this great universal figure of Christian thought and spirituality.
