Festivities in Honour of Our Lady the Virgen del Rosario
Various spots around the town are decorated with crosses. Residents throw themselves wholeheartedly into this tradition, putting in great care, effort and work to achieve results of great beauty. An open-air dance is also held in Calle Vera Cruz, and on the 3rd the Cristo de la Vera Cruz is carried in procession through the streets.
Two pilgrimages, with a solemn Eucharist and procession at 11 in the morning, are held in honour of Nuestra Sra. de la Fuensanta Coronada at her Sanctuary.
Held in the hamlet of La Quintería.
Patron saint of Villanueva de la Reina. Cultural, sporting and leisure activities are organised to mark the occasion.
Cross Day, 3 May, marks the feast of the town's patron saint: the Santísimo Cristo de la Vera-Cruz. The decoration of artistic crosses by residents and local groups at various points around the town and its outlying hamlets is an activity the town council has encouraged in recent years, creating a competition that rewards imagination and good taste.
The Villacarrillo Fair has grown considerably in recent years, becoming one of the most important in the province of Jaén. This celebration has its origins in the medieval trade and livestock fair, which allowed residents to exchange goods, and it was Ferdinand VII who gave it official status. It is held in honour of the patron saints, the Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz and Nuestra Señora del Rosario, from 9 to 16 September, although the first main day of the fair is the 14th. The light, the colour, the friendly atmosphere and the hospitality make Villacarrillo a destination for many relatives visiting from elsewhere, visitors from neighbouring towns, and countless people who have fallen in love with Villacarrillo and its fair. During the first few days, the traditional bull runs take place through the town's streets. These bull runs, dating back to the 18th century, are extremely popular in the province. Its bullring, opened in 1955, has seen — and continues to see — the top names in bullfighting pass through, and enjoys great prestige at national level. Nor should we forget the interesting cultural and sporting activities, open-air dances, concerts and more, organised by the town's council.
