Mozário de Santiago road

To enter the Mozário Road of Santiago from Jaén is to discover one of the oldest and most evocative historical routes on the peninsula. This itinerary, used since the Middle Ages by the MozArab Christians who lived in Andalusian territory, connected the peninsular south with Córdoba, Mérida and the Via de la Plata to Santiago de Compostela. Today, centuries later, it remains a living road that invites the traveller to travel Andalusia in a different way: more paused, more authentic and deeply linked to the territory. Walking on the MozArab Way is traveling on a land where each stage tells a story. From the monumental of the Cathedral of Jaén to the border castles of the South Sierra, the road is accompanied by landscapes that change with light, peoples that preserve its essence and a culture that mixes Iberian, Roman, Arab and Christian roots. It is an experience that combines nature, heritage and tradition, perfect for those who seek a quiet, sustainable and meaningful tourism.

Discover the Way of Santiago along the province of Jaén

On its way through Jaén, the Mozário Road crosses one of the most unique territories of Spain: the Sierra Sur, a space marked by ancient borders, medieval fortresses and a landscape that is not forgotten. Here is the largest humanized forest in the world, made up of over 66 million olive trees, a green sea that accompanies the traveller for miles and turns every day into a visual show.

The tour brings together municipalities full of history and hospitality. In them you will find:

  • Monumental heritage: castles, churches, hermitage, walls and historical sets that tell centuries of cultural coexistence.
  • Near nature: paths between olive groves, soft saws, streams and natural viewpoints.
  • Local Gastronomy: extra virgin olive oil, garden products, traditional pastries and dishes that recover ancestral recipes.
  • Hosting villages: places where the traveller is received in close proximity, where the quiet pace of rural life is still preserved.

The MozArab Way is not only a spiritual route, but also a journey through the history of our province. You walk through the Green Way of Oil, which follows the route of an old railway road, you will discover the world's largest humanized forest with more than 66 million strategically located olive trees and a unique beauty that invites you to enjoy every step of the way. And you will be able to know the footprint of civilizations like the Iberians, Romans and Arabs, who left their legacy in the architecture, agriculture and traditions of the region.

Stages

The Mozarabic Way, as it passes through Jaén, unfolds into two major routes that cross the Sierra Sur and converge on a single destination: Alcaudete, the natural gateway to the province of Córdoba.
The first of these routes begins in the city of Jaén itself, where your journey starts at the imposing Jaén Cathedral, a jewel of the Andalusian Renaissance. From there, you follow an itinerary steeped in history, linking the towns of Torredelcampo, Jamilena and Martos, until reaching Alcaudete, where rural landscapes and medieval heritage go hand in hand.
The second route arrives from Granada, crossing frontier lands and towns steeped in tradition. Along the way, you pass through Alcalá la Real, with its majestic Fortaleza de la Mota, and continue through Castillo de Locubín and Ventas del Carrizal, joining the route from Jaén, also at Alcaudete.
From this point, both routes merge into a single path heading towards Córdoba, following the trail of centuries of pilgrimage and cultural exchange.
