Descripción
Breve descripción

These festivities have been held since 1808 in honour of San Juan Bautista, Patron Saint of the Jaén town of Navas de San Juan.

On the afternoon of 24 June, the Patron Saint is carried through the town's streets to the bullring, to the sound of pasodobles, to make a lap of the ring as a blessing and endorsement of the popular events prepared in his honour, a tradition that defines these festivities.

Among the recreational events, the "bull runs" stand out, a custom held since time immemorial, in which fighting bulls are run through the town's streets.

Both at the fairground, with its open-air dance, fairground attractions and mobile bars, and at the town's other bars and restaurants, the joy and festive spirit characteristic of the people of Navas overflows during these final days of June, marking the start of summer.

He is the patron saint of Frailes and, therefore, a local festival day. His hermitage is located at Las Eras del Mecedero, and every 29 June, with great solemnity, Mass is celebrated in the morning, sheltered in the shade of the nearby walnut trees.

In the afternoon, a procession is held, and once it ends, an open-air dance takes place, with young and old alike joining together in rhythmic movement.

Virgen de Nazaret

Descripción
Breve descripción

On the second Sunday of May, although the traditional date was 8 May, the popular “Romería de la Carrasca” takes place, in honour of the patron saint, a festival celebrated since time immemorial by the people of Chiclana and those of Venta de los Santos, the latter now belonging to the municipality of Montizón. Like any devotion to a patron saint, this one comes with its own history and legend, both woven into the very foundations of Chiclana's festive tradition. Popular tradition tells that when Venta de los Santos belonged to Chiclana, both the people of Chiclana and those of Venta used to hold a joint pilgrimage in honour of the Virgen de Nazaret and the Cristo de la Expiración, celebrated at a spot known as the “Cortijillo de la Virgen”. In 1767, King Charles III issued the Charter of the New Settlements of Sierra Morena, giving rise to the new settlement of Montizón, to which Venta de los Santos would come to belong. A dispute then arose between the parishioners of both places over who would keep the beautiful Gothic image of the Virgen de Nazaret. The bishop had to intervene in the matter, deciding that the two images should be assigned by lottery; as chance would have it, the Virgin went to Venta de los Santos, while the Christ went to Chiclana. Legend has it that when the young men of both settlements went to lift the image assigned to them by lot, they found they could not lift it, no matter how hard they tried. They then decided to swap the teams of bearers, and the people of Venta were able to lift the Christ, while those of Chiclana lifted the Virgin — taken as a providential sign of where the holy images wished to reside. When the people of Chiclana carried the Virgin in procession towards their town, so that she would remain there permanently, they stopped to rest at the spot known as La Carrasca, which has since been called the “Descansadero de la Carrasca”, and is the place from which, every year, their patron saint, the Virgen de Nazaret, is carried in pilgrimage.

On 8 September, further celebrations are held in honour of the patron saint, including the traditional bull runs. The origins of this tradition date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, held right in the historic centre, where a bullring is built entirely by hand. The sight of the bulls being brought up across the countryside into the streets of Chiclana, viewed from the Trascastillo, is an unforgettable spectacle.

Breve descripción

During the first days of August, various leisure, sporting and cultural activities are held as part of the Cultural Week leading up to the main days of the festival, which fall roughly between 11 and 15 August.

Open-air dances and the traditional bull runs take place, with the animals later fought in the afternoon bullfighting events.

These days are marked by the return of many locals of Castillo de Locubín now living elsewhere.

These are the patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de Consolación, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Breve descripción

The events begin with the so-called San Marcos Chico, in which small young bulls, without horns or with padded horns, are let out for children to run with. On the 23rd and 24th, the bulls are unloaded from their pens and the brave bulls released, with the day rounded off by a popular open-air dance. On the 25th, the town band plays a wake-up call and parades through the streets to announce that at eight in the morning the bulls will be released into an area closed off by shutting several streets.

After ten in the morning, Mass is held, followed by the procession in honour of San Marcos, in which the saint is accompanied through the town's streets by two decorated young bulls on ropes. After the procession, the bulls are released once more into the enclosed area. The day ends with an open-air dance featuring the various local clubs ("peñas") that take part in the festival. Members of these clubs usually immobilise the bulls in order to fit them with brightly coloured harnesses set with mirrors, an act known as "cascar al toro".

The Brotherhood of San Marcos plays a key role in organising the festival. The origins of the celebration of San Marcos in Beas go back to time immemorial, and as early as the 16th century there is a record that the town of Beas had made a solemn vow to San Marcos, since ancient times, for having delivered them from a plague of locusts. This vow consisted of not eating meat and not slaughtering any livestock on that day, nor opening the butcher's shops.

Since 1993, following heated debate between supporters and opponents of the festival, the roped bull of Beas has been subject to current regulations, under which animals, once run in an enclosed area, must be slaughtered and not returned to their herd. Nevertheless, the custom of the San Marcos bull is so deeply rooted in Beas that a little song is still often sung as an act of reaffirmation and defence of the festival: ¡Viva la fiesta de San Marcos! / Nadie la puede quitar, / ni el alcalde, ni su hermano, / ni Tomás el municipal. ("Long live the feast of San Marcos! No one can take it away, neither the mayor, nor his brother, nor Tomás the town officer.")

In 2000, an application was made for the Feast of San Marcos to be declared of National Tourist Interest of Andalusia, a designation made official in the Resolution of 7 September 2000 issued by the Regional Minister for Tourism and Sports.
