Commemorative Festivities of the Battle of Bailén
For one unrepeatable night, the World Heritage city invites visitors to stroll slowly, to see with fresh eyes, and to let themselves be carried along by the silence, the shadows and the emotion. Every corner becomes a small miracle of light; every street, an intimate journey to the heart of the Renaissance. Baeza by candlelight is not just visited: it is experienced. A sensory, cultural and deeply human experience that happens only once a year.
For two nights, the fairground transforms into a place where everything flows: the chords, the people, the joy, and the AOVE that defines us. An intimate, comfortable, vibrant festival, made for those seeking more than just concerts: an experience to be felt, shared and remembered. Top-level artists, local gastronomy, a unique atmosphere, and the magic of a World Heritage City as a backdrop.
The figure of the roped bull is the symbolic centrepiece of the celebration. Its presence is linked to ancient ritual practices related to the protection of livestock and the blessing of the fields. Over time, this custom became established as a festive tradition combining devotion, community participation and historical continuity.
The handling of the bull by rope, carried out by teams of young men, follows traditional rules passed down from generation to generation. This act represents not only a festive element but also an exercise in communal responsibility and respect for tradition.
The festival stands out for its ability to keep alive a cultural legacy that forms part of the town's collective memory. Its continuity rests on the involvement of the local population, intergenerational transmission, and institutional commitment to preserving local traditions.
The Days pay tribute to the legendary figure of Macías el Enamorado, a key character in medieval folklore and a symbol of Arjonilla's cultural identity. During the event, the streets of the historic centre transform into a genuine medieval stage, with craft markets, historical re-enactments, music, theatre and activities for all audiences.
The programme will include street parades, entertainment shows, exhibitions, workshops and gastronomic offerings, allowing residents and visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the period. The Days have become a provincial benchmark for their ability to bring together heritage, culture and community participation.
From June to September, the Parade Ground of the Castle of the Troubadour Macías in Arjonilla fills with life, art and emotion, making the most of the good weather and the magic of summer nights. Each event invites visitors to travel back in time and discover the castle through a sensory, participatory lens, in a warm and special atmosphere. An open-air cultural experience, where history, creativity and summer come together under the stars.
The line-up will also feature performances by singers Rancapino Chico and Manuel Cribaño “El niño de Peñaflor”, guitar by Antonio Higuero and Javi Santiago, and,
in dance: Carmen Álvarez and her group.
Through this kind of event, the province of Jaén, and specifically the town of Andújar, has established itself as the benchmark for eastern Andalusia in the equestrian world. As far as competition is concerned, Andújar is part of the ANCCE (National Association of Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders) competition circuit. For this reason, since 2004 the Anducab Morphological-Functional Competition has been held, one of the 5 most important competitions in Spain, awarding points towards the International Horse Fair (SICAB), held every year in Seville.
Over the course of a week, the city's streets fill with standards, decorated horses, and brotherhoods arriving from every corner of Spain to greet “La Morenita”, the small yet powerful Virgin so many regard as mother, refuge and guide.
The journey to the Sanctuary is one made on foot, but also with the soul. Pilgrims make their way through holm oaks and cistus scrub, accompanied by the beat of drums, the jingling of medals, and voices singing ancient prayers.
Sunday is her main day. The Pontifical Mass, the crowd gathering on the esplanade, the cheers rising like a collective clamour... and then, the procession, that moment when the Virgin emerges amid a cloud of flowers, tears and promises.
