Sociedad Cooperativa Andaluza Sierra de Génave
The Andalusian cooperative society Sierra de Génave is a pioneer in the manufacture of organic oil of a variety of picual, as it was the first producer of this type of oil in Spain, thanks to its participation in the EU's research programme Eclair 209 in 1990.
Today, its brand Oro de Génave is the most recognized and consumed extra organic virgin olive oil in the world, obtained from organic olive groves that are certified by the Andalusian Committee for Ecological Agriculture.
The main building has a beautiful architecture in a more classic Andalusian style, with an area of reception of visits, administrative units, social units, quality control, catas, packaging area and warehouses of raw materials and finished products. It also has a small two-phase ecological mould and a patio with reception awnings, washing machine and stainless steel cleaner.
Our environment
Génave is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, located to the north of the Sierra de Segura region. The municipality is part of the Natural Park of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, the largest protected space in Spain, whose environmental characteristics have been worth the recognition of the Biosphere Reserve.
Our landscape is made up of a wide valley of asymmetric slopes and alominated reliefs crowned by the Picarzo, 1,296 m high. In our term, the Herreros River and some streams such as the Culebras and the Cambrón run.
Apart from the main population core, the villages of "La Almohadilla," "Las Grillas," "Las Atalayas" (where there is an archaeological site of dinosaurs) and "La Venta del Pilar" are also known as "La Venta del Fungo."
The main resource of this region is the production of high quality olive oil and Génave stands out as a pioneer in the cultivation of the organic olive tree. The dominant variety in the production area is Picual, which is 97% of the area's olive groves. The trees are very vigorous, with somewhat short branches and with a tendency to produce ramifications in braces. Its fruits, from 2.5 to 3.5 grams, have an oil yield of 21 to 25%. It is a variety with good resistance to cryptogamic diseases, being very resistant to low temperatures.
