Descripción larga
Nothing remains of the primitive hermitage, since throughout the 16th century and on its foundations, a sanctuary was built, a large part of it destroyed during the last Civil War (1936-1939). The siege and defense of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Cabeza was magnified by the Franco regime. But until it became a parish headquarters, the Sanctuary has gone through different vicissitudes since its origin. According to all indications, the construction works began in 1287 and ended in 1304, first being a small hermitage that the people of Andújar built in the heart of Sierra Morena. However, the expansions and reforms have been almost constant throughout the ages, reaching their maximum splendor in the 16th century, between 1530 and 1590, when it became a Sanctuary, very similar to the one we know today. In 1945 the architect Prieto Moreno, conservator of the Alhambra, directed the restoration works of the architectural complex, which became one of the most precious symbols of the national Catholicism of the dictator Francisco Franco. The pilgrimage continues to be celebrated, as is custom and tradition, on the last Sunday of April, although the image that is venerated, carved by the Granada sculptor Navas Parejo, is not the original one, since it disappears in strange and still unclear circumstances in the aforementioned contest. Thanks to the Book of Chapters of the Brotherhood (1554-1565), preserved in the Diocesan Archive of Jaén (made known by J. Domínguez, R. Frías and S. Lázaro), we know numerous data about the level of work on the new Renaissance church during these years, although the process began years ago; The new factory began at the head, with the large main chapel being built between the years 1534 and 1541 according to a late Gothic plan, being separated from the rest by a beautiful Renaissance railing. The works on the rest of the temple passed through various hands and circumstances. The Trinitarian Community has addressed two new expansions. The first consisted of raising the projecting floor, building another pavilion in the rear area of the North wing. Thus, the entire structure of the cloister patio was completed in a harmonious and functional way. The second phase was carried out in 1965 in the entire north wing, adding a three-story building to expand the rooms of the Trinitarian priests who attend to worship, permanently since 1930. The central nave is separated from the Main Chapel by a 16th century grille, restored by the School of Arts and Crafts of Granada, which closes an opening with a semicircular arch. The High Altar has a large space in the center, behind which is the Virgin's dressing room; carving by José Navas Parejo, which replaced the old one that disappeared during the civil war. The side chapels of the nave are occupied by different altars, containing various images, such as a Crucified by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, the Virgin of Pilar, Blessed Marcos Criado, San Juan Bautista de la Concepción, the Holy Trinity and the Virgin of Carmen. In the choir there is a magnificent organ, a gift from the Civil Guard, inaugurated by the famous master organist Guridi. Behind the Main Chapel is the sacristy. In 1555, the master stonemason Domingo de Azpeitia undertook to build a temple with three naves with column supports, however, at the express wish of the prelate Don Diego Tavera (1555-1560), this approach was radically transformed, prohibiting the execution of the pillars. Don Diego Tavera sent Andrés de Vandelvira to give new plans for the church, as noted in the minutes of April 27, 1558 of the aforementioned Book of Cabildos. Vandelvira eliminated the pillars with the idea of designing a different, larger church, with a single nave with chapels-niches open to it. In 1559, Vandelvira visited the works and presented new plans for its conclusion, as well as the design of the main façade. For less than a year the construction was under the control of Francisco del Castillo “El Mozo”, and the Brotherhood even required a certain report from Hernán Ruiz II. In 1562, the Brotherhood requested a new inspection of Andrés de Vandelvira, but he did not respond. In any case, the project continued with the stonemasons proposed by Vandelvira, Juan Martínez and Domingo de Jay, who executed what remained following the guidelines and the plan designed by the Master. This must have been the case, as can be seen from the description of the temple that Salcedo de Olid made in the 17th century: “It has a nave without columns (...) and the main chapel is distinguished, majestic and very attractive.” Based on the remains preserved after its destruction in 1936, the Vandelvirian temple actually included a church with a large nave, covered with a barrel vault and niche chapels, which was separated from the main chapel by a powerful main arch. From the exterior, quite compact, only the façade at the foot is notable with three axis elements: doorway, balcony and belfry. The ornamental nudity of the complex is contemporary with the latest work of Andrés de Vandelvira. The Trinitarian Community has addressed two new expansions. The first consisted of raising the projecting floor, building another pavilion in the rear area of the North wing. Thus, the entire structure of the cloister patio was completed in a harmonious and functional way. The second phase was carried out in 1965 in the entire north wing, adding a three-story building to expand the quarters of the Trinitarian priests who attend to worship, permanently since 1930. OTHER NON-ARCHITECTURAL ARTISTIC MANIFESTATIONS. A Museum has been installed in the Sanctuary with diverse and varied pieces of varying artistic quality. Among all of them, we highlight two paintings from the 17th century with representations of the famous Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza Pilgrimage, an image lost in the last Civil War of 1936-1939. After the war, a new carving was commissioned from the Granada workshops of Navas Parejo, which is the one that has been venerated in Cabezo ever since. One of the few pieces saved from the destruction of the said Sanctuary was the grille of the main chapel, restored in 1941 at the School of Arts and Crafts of Granada. Hired in 1564, it depicts the apparition of the Virgin to the shepherd of Colomera. LITERATURE In the middle of the Civil War, the military rebellion in the province of Jaén failed, a group of civil guards along with their families settled in the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Cabeza, this being the scene of a bloody siege by the Republican troops. A monument commemorates this event at the entrance to the Sanctuary and if you look closely, traces of shrapnel can still be seen on the side walls of the Basilica. Miguel Hernández will journalistically describe the assault of this siege, transmitting in detail its development, which will last from September 14, 1936 to May 1, 1937, when the besieged surrender. Southern Front. Number 15, May 13, 1937 (...) "The building of the Head dawns before the bloody and dark dawn. In it I saw the representation of a tricorn monster... (...)

Basilica of Santa María la Mayor

OTRAS MANIFESTACIONES ARTÍSTICAS NO ARQUITECTÓNICAS

Monument declared 02 / 07 / 1974 Linares, a village belonging to the end of Baeza since the 13th century, experienced throughout the 16th century an extraordinary economic and demographic development that led to his emancipation under the reign of Philip II. The proceedings, initiated in 1564, bear fruit on 15 August of the following year, the Council and neighbours being forced to pay the Crown the undespicable sum of 20,000 ducats. The increase in the population of Linares, which rose from 657 neighbours in 1528 to 1,059 in 1586, led to an increase in the number of feligresses.

Arab Baths

Descripción
Descripción larga
After the conquest of the city in 1246 by Ferdinand III the Saint, its use continued during the first years of Christian rule. It will be between the 14th and 15th centuries when its function as a bath disappears when the Christians establish tanneries in its rooms. Proof of this are the remains of its facilities that are still preserved in the Temperate and Hot Rooms. At the end of the 16th century, Don Fernando de Torres y Portugal, Count of Villardompardo and Viceroy of Peru, built his Palace on the Baths, leaving part of them hidden between the foundations and basements, remaining this way during the 18th and 19th centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Palace became part of the real estate assets of the Provincial Council of Jaén, an institution that, between 1901 and 1903, freed up the space of several houses adjacent to the property in order to build a Chapel for the Women's Hospice. These works must have affected the remains that still remained of the bathrooms. In 1913, during the inspection of the Palacio de Villardompardo factory for the preparation of the Monumental Catalog of Jaén, a small part of the Baths was discovered by Don Enrique Romero de Torres. Just four years later, they were visited by the Professor of Archeology Mr. Manuel Gómez Moreno, who, once the appropriate data had been taken, proposed the property as a National Monument. This proposal was accepted and in 1931 the remains were declared a National Monument with the General Registry number 528. In 1936 the restoration works began under the direction of Mr. Leopoldo Torres Balbás and his partner, the architect from Jaén, Mr. Luis Berges Martínez. However, these works would be interrupted by the beginning of the Civil War. It would not be until 1970 when the General Directorate of Fine Arts commissioned the first restoration project of the Baths to the architect Luis Berges Roldán, son of the previous one. This initial project was followed by six more in successive years, the last two in 1980 and 1982, in agreement with the Provincial Council of Jaén. Thanks to the work, most of the Rooms that can be seen today were discovered. Once the works were completed in 1984, the Europa Nostra Association awarded the Medal of Honor that year to the restoration of the Arab Baths. The rooms that make up the Arab Baths are: Lobby (al-bayt al-maslaj) The entrance hall is a transverse room 14 meters long by 3.80 meters wide, with bedrooms at both ends separated from the rest of the room by horseshoe arches on half columns, a scheme that will be repeated in all the other rooms. On both sides of the entrance there are two blocks. The room is covered by a barrel vault and has 18 star lights. The floor was covered in white marble and the walls were plastered and painted with decoration of red arches on a white background. Cold Room (al-bayt al-barid) Adjacent and very similar to the previous one although smaller in size (11.4 m x 3.50 m.), this room is also covered by a half-barrel vault in which 12 windows are located. The bedroom located on the far right is covered with a dome with 5 lights. Temperate Room (al-bayt al-wastani) It consists of a large square hall measuring 11.30 m x 11.30 m which, in turn, encloses another central square, this one covered by a large dome with a hemispherical cap on pendentives. The dome does not rest on solid walls but on horseshoe arches supported by eight columns. In the four corners of the great hall there are four other smaller domes, and the remaining spaces are covered with four half-barrel vaults with 3 windows in each of them. This large room gives way, through two horseshoe arches, to another room of 11.30 m x 2.80 m that presides over the entire complex and is covered by a half-barrel vault; having two bedrooms at the ends covered with domes with windows. Hot Room (al-bayt al-sajum) With dimensions of 15.90 m long by 3.30 m wide, the hot room is very similar to the previous rooms. It is covered with a half-barrel vault with 15 windows and with two bedrooms at the ends with 5 windows each. This room is located next to the boilers where the water was heated. Its walls are covered by hidden chimneys through which hot air circulated. In the center of the room, a large flared arch separates it from the place where the boiler was. On both sides of this central arch, two small rooms contain: one, a square sitz bath and the other, two jars. Under its stone floor, the entire room is hollow: numerous small brick pillars support it, allowing hot air to circulate, which, due to its natural tendency, rises and adheres to the floor, warming it. Juan Eslava Galán makes continuous mention of both spaces in Los Templarios and Salomón's Table. (…) In the center of the Magdalena neighborhood, surrounded by the initiation places of the old matriarchal sanctuary, in front of the palace of the counts of Villardompardo, scions of the Torres family, in whose basements you can visit the Arab baths where the Moorish king died (…) The Templars and Solomon's Table. Chapter 27. In the same building that makes up the Villardompardo palace there is also the Museo Internacional de Arte Naïf “Manuel Moral”, the first and only one in Spain specialized in this art; and the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Jaén. In the square in front of the palace, there is also an element that Juan Eslava Galán is very interested in in his research on the Templars: the duck fountain. (…) in the Santa Luisa de Marillac square (…). In the center, emerging from the still water, an octagonal pillar (so common in Templar and Calatrava construction) supports a hemisphere (the stone of the Mother Goddess) on which stands a goose with its palmiped legs extended on the stone. (…). Let us remember that the goose is one of the main symbols of the matriarchal cults of the sanctuary (...) The Templars and Solomon's Table. Chapter 26.
Breve descripción
Built in the 11th century, the Arab Baths are located in the basements of the Palacio de Villardompardo. They have an area of 450 square meters, which probably makes them the largest of those that can be visited in Spain. Judging by the remains of Almohad decoration that are preserved in some of its rooms, they must have been restored towards the end of the 12th century.

Breve descripción
The building that houses the Arjona Town Hall is a traditional Andalusian style house from the 19th century that Juan Eslava Galán describes very precisely: (…) The Arjona Town Hall was an Andalusian-style house with a bright and beautiful interior patio paved with marble and surrounded by columns. Along the walls, a beautiful tiled plinth ran up to mid-height. In the corners there were pots of aspidistras; on the walls, bulletin boards and large, faded aerial photographs of the town. At the back was the marble staircase that led to the upper floor.(…) The Arjona Town Hall is one of the last places that Pío Expósito, the protagonist of the novel, visits in the city. He only goes to return an umbrella to the secretary, but he will find an unexpected surprise. Once inside the building, it is worth visiting the room called the Old Town Hall Room, which is used as a reception place for official visits and which has a historicist decoration with medieval Islamic reminiscences, with typical elements of Mudejar, Nasrid or Caliphate artistic styles and, therefore, differentiated from the rest of the Town Hall. This decoration was originally located in the palace-house of Barón de Velasco, Fernando Ruano Prieto.

With an elegant and proportionate facade, it is typical of the classicism of the 17th century. The facade is divided into two floors, the one below has in the center a cover and on the double sides of the rectangular windows intellized. The superior features a gallery with 11 half-point arches supported on double columns. The open character of the gallery contrasts with the solid and sober underfloor in the style of the Italian palaces of Quatrocento. The building housed the Casas de los Cabildos, which occupied the top, the prison, on the lower right and the Posite on the left, and was completed by 1,642. In 1983 it was declared Good of Cultural Interest.
