La Iruela

Descripción
Descripción larga

Next to the castle you will find the ruins of the Church of Sto. Silos Sunday. The legend tells that it was built on the place where the Arabs held captive Christians in prison and there was Santo Domingo doing his job. In the building there are traces of the disciples of Vandelvira. It's a must-see for any lover of history.

The Iruela was part of Cazorla until 1370, when Archbishop D. Gome Manrique gave it independence, power and shield. His political and territorial position has allowed him to preserve an important heritage: the Conistory House - a proud building in the Mudejar style of Toledan - and the Church of the Immaculate Conception are part of this legacy.

The population has a core worth visiting. The streets are steep and narrow, with crouched houses and flowers on the balconies. In the center there is a beautiful fountain from which several roads arise to surround the village. From here you can go up to Temple Street on a beautiful stone road accompanied by fig trees and cypresses.

We suggest:

  • About five minutes from La Iruela you will find Burunchel. Come to know the Hermitage of San Julián and the temple of the Holy Spirit among other attractions of this pedany.
  • On August 27, during the summer parties of the village you will see a curious pyrotechnic show, in which the castle is also the protagonist.
Breve descripción

The road that goes up to the saw from Cazorla borders this small, but amazing population. Its best known profile is due to the castle, a legendary fortress that became owned by the Templars and dominates the Guadalquivir Valley. The need to defend itself has given rise to this fortification which, because of its most abrupt aspect, is inexortable. But the Iruela is more attractive.

This important city, settled on the hills of its own name, is located in the centre of the province of Jaénand is the capital of the region called La Loma.

Surrounded by a landscape of an extraordinary natural beautyin which the flat grounds for the cultivation of the cereal are alternated, with the smooth slopes of olive trees, seems to summarize the essence of the province of Jaén.

It is very important, within its varied economy, the crafts, with numerous workshops of pottery and ceramics, of forge, size, glass, tapestries, spartum, singing, etc.

As we walk through its lordship streets to admire the monuments, churches, palaces and lordship houses, we move virtually to the times of the historical splendor of this city.

Ubeda is known as "the city of the Andalusian Renaissance"for the quantity and quality of the monuments of this artistic age.

Together with Baeza, it has been declared World Cultural Heritage by Unesco on 3 July 2003.

Ubeda has a beautiful monumental and cultural heritage that makes it a fundamental destination for those interested in the Renaissance architecture.

From its heritage we will highlight the excellent degree of conservation of many of its buildings, which still keep details of the time as can be the doors of claveted wood, the iron aldabas, the lanterns and the bars.

It covers such a number of monuments, churches, palaces and master houses, that it would be difficult for us to list them here to the full. Among its most notable monuments of Ubeda are the following:

Historical center:

  • Plaza Vázquez de Molina
  • Sacra Capilla Funeraria de El Salvador del Mundo
  • Basilica of Santa Maria de los Reales Alcázares
  • Palace of Vázquez de Molina or Palace of the Chains. Current City Hall and houses the Andrés de Vandelvira Interpretation Center
  • Deán Ortega Palace. Current National Tourism Parator
  • Hospital de los Honrados Viejos de El Salvador
  • Palace of the Marquis de Mancera
  • Vela de los Cobos Palace
  • Church of San Pedro
  • Church of St. Paul. Located at 1 May.

Barrio del Alcázar, San Lorenzo and Santo Domingo:

  • Casa de Las Torres
  • Palace of the Medinilla
  • Church of San Lorenzo
  • Church of Santo Domingo

  • Valencia Street. Numerous craft workshops to visit.
  • Church of San Millán
  • Palacio Francisco de los Cobos

Route of San Juan de la Cruz:

  • Convent of San Miguel and Oratorio of San Juan de la Cruz

In addition to these interesting attractions, we suggest a visit to the walls to contemplate the extraordinary panorama obtained from them.

Naturaleza

It is the main center of the region called La Loma. Ubeda is located on a hill at 750 m of altitude, and is surrounded by the valleys of the Guadalquivir and the Guadalimar.

Very close, around it, are the Natural Parks of Despeñacolos, Sierra Magina and Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas.

The landscape is very characteristic because it is composed of a "sea of olive trees," as the poet Antonio Machado wrote.

Fiestas y Eventos

The city of Ubeda presents a mosaic of cultural activities, festivals, fairs, romanias... Events all very deeply rooted in the population and with a very consolidated organization, which makes visitors from all parts of Spain participate.

It is worth the celebration of the Holy Week, one of the most popular parties in Andalusia, being declared a National Tourist Interest Party.

On May 1, the Romeria de la Virgen de Guadalupe, patron of Ubeda and known as the "Great Romery." That day the Virgin moved from her sanctuary to the village of Santa Eulalia.

Typical are also the San Antón fires"the lumbres." On January 16, fires are made in the different neighborhoods, where sardines are roasted or the cobbled.

Special emphasis party of San Isidro Labradoron 15 May, farmers' employers and who enjoy much devotion among the olive workers.

Together with the neighbouring city of Baeza, the Festival of Ancient Music. And in the last months of the year, the puppet and tale festivals take place.

And we cannot stop quoting the San Miguel Fairon September 29, the city's patron party. And during the days of this fair the Autumn Theatre Show takes place, as well as high-quality musical activities and children's activities for all ages.

Other relevant events highlight theFlamenco and Mestizo Festival "City of Ubeda" or Exhibition of Autumn Theatre of Ubeda.

+ INFO

Gastronomía

The ubetense cuisine is basically Mediterranean, with influences both manchegas, alumina and Andalusian root.

The table includes legumes, game meat and products derived from the "slaughter of the pig," and, of course, virgin olive oil and table olives. Among the most outstanding dishes would be:

  • The crumbs (reminiscent of the shepherds in transhumanism).
  • The ointment, an olive oil cake.
  • The slick.
  • Potage of beans with eggplants.

The bars and canteens are the traditional meeting point of the ubetens. If you visit the city in September you can attend the Fiesta de la Tapa.

We cannot forget the "Gourmet days of the Renaissance". They take place from January to March in the most emblematic restaurants, where both lunch time and dinner are accompanied by shows.

Historia

The latest archaeological research shows that the first settlements of Ubeda date back to the Copper and Bronze Age (III and II millennium A.C), being the "oldest city in Europe" scientifically documented.

In search of product exchanges the Greeks will arrive and later the Carthaginians, who would be defeated by the Romans. It is under the Roman Empire, from the battle of Llipa in 206 BC, when the old city is romanized and will be known as the Betula.

The city takes on importance with the arrival of the Arabs, in particular with Abdeleran II, in the S. IX, who overlooks it with the name of Ubbada or Ubbadat Al-Arab (Ubeda "of the Arabs"). As a Muslim city it was surrounded by walls and became one of the most important cities of Al- Andalus, due mainly to its crafts and trade.

In the S. XI it will be conquered by the alparavids. And the definitive Christian conquest was carried out in 1234 by King Fernando III.

A number of factors, such as the geographical location, its extensive and rich jurisdiction, as well as the presence of an increasingly powerful nobility, would lay the foundation for the splendor that Ubeda reached in the 16th century.

The economic development of the city based on agriculture and on the feral livestock, the rotations of the forests that represented an increase in the land of cultivation, and having a mesta of its own, will base the greatest splendor of the city, which was a demographic increase to reach 18,000 inhabitants.

In addition to the ubetense nobility and the Orders of Cavalry, we found a group of neighbors who have prospered (doctors, tailor, scribes, bots...) that will lead to an incipient bourgeoisie.

To highlight the role of Francisco de los Cobos, secretary of Charles I, who, with his interest in art and under the advice of the architect Andrés de Vandelvira, fills the city with palaces. In Ubeda, take root the humanist currents of the Renaissance. It will be Juan Vázquez de Molina, Secretary of Charles I and Philip II, who will continue with the planning initiated by his predecessor.

Declive:
The 17th and 18th centuries are of decline for the city, as Spain is in a general crisis. The bad crops, the unfair pressure of taxation to cover the cost of wars, corruption, the power of the clergy, the expulsion of the Moorish, will be factors that contribute to the loss of that splendor that characterized this city.

Later, in 1820 and 1836, ecclesiastical disamortizations, Carlist wars, Civil War and post-war will come.

Recovery:
It will be in the 1960s and 70s of the last century, thanks to the development pull, when slowly it was the "Florence of Alta Andalucía" go to the present place and become a provincial reference point, head of the region of La Loma and a centre of industry and services of increasing importance.

Otra información

Known people born in Ubeda:

  • Antonio Muñoz Molina, writer and member of the Royal Academy of Language.
  • Joaquín Sabina, singer.

In Ubeda dies San Juan de la Cruzon 14 December 1591.

The popular saying of leaving or "walking on the hills of Ubeda," has its origin in the conquest of the Almohades of the Jienese city of Ubeda in 1234. It seems that one of the most important captains of King Fernando III "the Holy," disappeared moments before entering into combat, and that he appeared after the city was conquered. Asked where he had been, he replied that he had been lost by the hills of Ubeda.

These reasons are further enriched by the fact that San Juan de la Cruz died here, having been brought to the city to recover from a slight fever, and by the fact that it is the birthplace of Antonio Muñoz Molina, winner of the Premio Planeta and the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature.

You must come to Úbeda and venture into its streets and monuments, discovering them through the eyes of these authors. Without doubt, a different way to enjoy this monumental city.

Municipality formed by the localities of Santiago de la Espada and Pontones, based in Santiago de la Espada which is where the institutions are located. Until 1975 they were independent municipalities. In addition to these localities, there are 27 other population centres. Located north-east of the province of Jaén, it belongs to the region of Sierra de Segura. By extension is the largest municipality of the Natural Park of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas and the second of the province. It symbolizes the deep saw, with spectacular ravines, beautiful valleys and arrogant summits, which offer idyllic landscapes. The Segura River is born in the area of Fuente Segura.

For the climate and the orography only 3% is cultivated land, dedicated to the cultivation of herbaceans. Its climatology is the coldest in the province. The economic activities are the livestock, mainly the cattle (it has several cattle cattle), the forestry, the inland tourism, hunting and fishing.

From the Architectural Heritage we highlight the Church of Santiago Apostol, the urban helmets of Santiago, Pontón Alto and Pontón Bajo and other monuments located in some of the population centres that are part of the City Council.

  • Church of James the Apostle: Built on an ancient hermitage in the 16th century with influences of the last Levine Gothic. It is a single ship divided by four arches, covered by a pair of armor in a row of Mudejar tradition, sustained by a half-point diaphragm arches. It reproduces the scheme of the early churches of the final Gothic, with Baroque altards and a wide wooden choir with curious craftsmen and a banner. The major Retail is from the 18th century and is the most valuable artistic element of the temple. On the outside stands the square-floor tower, which in 1763 was necessary to rebuild.
  • Urban helmets of Santiago, Pontón Alto and Pontón Bajo. The urban helmets of these nuclei are made up of streets that remember the morphology of medieval urbanism, in which regular and geometric planning is not followed, but is built according to needs. This gives rise to narrow and irregular streets with typical serrana houses: stone facades, farmed and encased, with small gaps, outstanding tiles to fire water and snow and thin chimneys.
  • Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. Located in Pontones, it has been built in the late 19th century. It is small, with a single rectangular ship and a simple facade with a stone cover, in harmony with the type of architecture surrounding it.
  • The Brush: Old inn of the 16th century. You can see a wooden balconade, a sample of the vernacular architecture, whose zapatas and balastres are well protected by the wide aldero of the roof.

Naturaleza

Innailed in the Sierra de Segura, the municipality of Santiagos- Pontones, has an average altitude of 1,340 m., with a surface of 684 km ² that makes it the second municipality in extension of the province after Andújar.

Su orography which prevents its usefulness as a land of cultivation, differs with the rest of the municipalities of the province, occupying the olive tree an almost nil extension.

By the altitude it has a mountain climate, being much colder than the rest of the municipalities at all times of the year and one of the few where snow is not an extraordinary event.

Santiagos- Pontoons, fully included in the Natural Park of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas, one of the most valuable forest areas in Spain, both for its density and variety of species.

The area of high mountain is populated by salgarean or larice pine, sabinas, maples, acebos and thorns; in the valley of Guadalquivir welcomes the engraving in addition to the black pine and in the intermediate area The dense pine trees and pastures abound. Next to the rivers and banks of the swamps develop the gallery forests: chopos, birches, willows... that put a color note in the landscape with the passage of the seasons, especially during the fall.

The fauna It is also very varied, in forests are often observed large mammals like the boar, and the muflon, and the deer, and the shrimp, and the goat, small mammals like the liron, the otter, the jineta and the common squirrel. Among the reptiles is the Valverde lizard, endemic to the area, and among the fish is the common trout.

However, the birds are the majority, for which the municipality was declared a Special Protection of Birds Zone (ZEPA). Here we can see large-scale raptures: leonate vulture, rattlers, pilgrim hawk, eagles of different species, and even broken bones.

It is also easy to see another type of smaller birds like the blue climber, common gateer, carbonero tick, piquituerto, verderon, pinzón, zorzal, picapinos..., and close to the rivers and reservoirs, the aquatic myrtle, the watershed or the bastard nightingale.

The numerous natural enclaves that are scattered by the municipal term are the best spaces that offer us the best information to appreciate the landscape, the morphology of the land, as well as the fauna and flora of this municipality. These include:

  • Pico Banderillas. A summit of almost 2,000 m (1,993 m.) altitude from which we can see beautiful panoramic views of the Natural Park of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas.
  • The birth of the Segura. Inside the peculiar calcareous crest of Sierra de Segura, at 1,410 m of altitude, a crystalline water spring known as the Birth of the Segura River. Along its northwestern route it goes to the Mediterranean and collects the waters of the Wood, Zumeta and Tu rivers. In its surroundings there is a recreational area surrounded by a gallery forest. It's 22 km away. to the west of Santiago de la Sword.
  • Pino Galapan. It is an impressive natural monument, a 40 m tall larix pine and over four centuries old and four adults are needed to be able to surround its trunk with extended arms.
  • I jump from the organs. Next to the birth of the Borosa River, the Los Organos power plant presents a beautiful landscape that contains all the typical elements of the Natural Park. It highlights the geological environment, made up of calcareous formations of unusual forms that cause grotto and caves of great beauty.

Nice town, located in the northernmost area of the Sierra Morena regionnext to the provincial border with Ciudad Real.

The northern part of its term is found within the Natural Park of Despeñapores and its geographical position makes it the greatest point of passage between Andalusia and the plateau so it receives the nickname "Puerta de Andalucía. "

It is one of the few municipalities with little agricultural interest, only 1% of its term is cultivated land.

Its economy is based mainly on the exploitation of the mountain, among which the forest, cynegetic, mushroom collection and livestock, usually cattle. The passage of the motorway of Andalusia has developed a relevant hotel offer.

  • St. Helena Parish Church: It was erected in 1793 on an ancient medieval hermitage, which had been raised to commemorate the Christian victory in the battle of the Navas de Tolosa, which had these sites on stage and to guard the Cross to which the miracle was attributed. Built of redesigned and painted masonry, with a simple facade, of small dimensions. A staircase stands out the access door, composed of a half-point arch on imposts, flanked by Tuscan pillars that give way to an inlet finished with triangular fronton and two bones, one on each side. On the top of the first body, the pyramidal structure is raised to three levels, with pinacles at the ends and half-point holes for bells. Inside it is a single drawer ship, covered with a half-canyon vault and double lunetes on the sides. The presbyterium is opened with a spinal arch, covered with an arista vault and illuminated with two large bone-shaped windows. The header is presided over by the image of its patron saint, St. Helena, between dogrous columns that support an injunction and a curved fronton. It was remodeled in 2001.
  • Iberian Shrine of the Collado de los Jardines: It is located in the heart of Sierra Morena Oriental, on the most important traditional road of communication between Alta Andalucía and the Plateau. For the Iberian shrines they chose places, usually caves, located next to springs and forests, where it was thought that the divinity lived and where the faithful went to worship, pray and deliver offerings to their divinities. These offerings were what we know as "exvotes," small statues, between eight and twenty cm, made of bronze, stone or mud. In Iberian Shrine of the Collado de los Jardines There have been many exvotes, most of them bronze, representing men and women offering, priests, warriors and objects. It is part of the whole town that was excavated on the hill adjacent to the castle, where a wall, a sacred enclosure and a cast of metal exvotes have appeared. We meet before one of the three great Iberian shrines of the peninsula.
  • St. Helena's Urban Helmets:Given its geographical location, a forced passage between the plateau and Andalusia, has experienced many historical events. The Battle of the Navas de Tolosa in 1212 in which King Alfonso VIII of Castile defeated the Almohades. To commemorate this battle, a hermitage was erected in honor of the Empress St. Helena, who would later name this place and the new population, which King Charles III founded in 1767. In the colonizing urbanism of Sierra Morena, the most important element is the large rectangular square, from which they leave streets on each side and where are the important buildings, such as the Church, the City Hall and the posite of Diezmos and Labradores. The rest of the town is organized from the Plaza. The streets are dominated by axial perspectives, houses of the same height and proportions, reticular fabric and geometric structure. It only deviates from the neoclassical model on its perimeter, to adapt to the road. It has been declared Good for Cultural Interest.

  • Rupestrian Paints: The province of Jaén has more than forty points with rock paintings, declared World Heritage Sitewithin the whole Mediterranean arc. Some of them are found in St. Helena with exceptional testimonies of schematic and seminaturalist paintings, located in coats of the area, including those of the Cave of the Cows of the Retamoso in the area of the bodies, Cave of the Holy, the Cave of the Schools and some more.
  • Mining Heritage. The landscape of ancient mines and Mediterranean mountains of the former Minero District extends to eight municipalities: Linares, La Carolina, Bailén, Baños de la Encina, Vilches, Guarroman, Santa Elena and Carboneros. This mining activity has left in these municipalities an exceptional concentration of remains, unique vestiges in the world and representative of the industrial revolution in the 19th century.
Naturaleza

St. Helena is located in the northernmost sector of the northern region, next to the border with the province of Ciudad Real.

It is of the few municipalities of the province without agricultural vocation, only 1% of the total area. So its economy is based on development of the mountainincluding forest, cicnetic, mushroom collection and livestock (cattle).

The passage of the highway of Andalusia through the municipality has developed in the town a certain hotel offer of importance.

By its term the rivers run Caraway and Bell. The northern part of the municipality of St. Helena belongs to the Natural Park of Despeñacolos, of great landscape, faunistic and botanical interest.

The Park includes, among others:

  • Place of the bodies, declared a Natural Monument of Andalusia. A place where a set of huge rock columns that resemble the tubes of the organ of a cathedral. Increases the beauty of this place the chromatic contrast of the grey of the coas with the intense yellow and orange of the different species of lichens that survive in them. On these rocks, oaks, alcornoques and shrubs form a Mediterranean forest in which they inhabit ginets, chickpeas and numerous rapacious birds.
  • Embryo de los Organos: It is an affront place that was inhabited from very old, as shown by the rock paintings found. From here we can discover the pineapples of repopulation (carrascos, black, pineapples), sodas of alcornoques, complaints, oaks and madroños.
  • The Empedraillo: These are the interesting remains of a small section of the Roman road that unites Catulo (Linares) and the Galena mines of El Centenillo with Toledo.
  • Quejigal del Collado de los Jardines: Also located in the Natural Park of Despeñacolos, its biodiversity stands out. In the plant species we find complaints, alcornoques, maples and other species typical of the Mediterranean forest. With regard to the faunistic species that inhabit this place quote the wolf, lince, the otter, imperial eagle, royal eagle and azor.

If anything characterizes Despeñacolos are their unique geological formations. The Despeñapoerno de Despeñaperes, with 4 km of extension is the product of the erosion of the stream of the same name on a natural failure of the Iberian Macizo and the main means of communication between Castilla La Mancha and the lower lands of the Guadalquivir valley.

Before you have to meet the rite of making them roll by a earring of grass so they don't break. This has meant that, in St. Helena, the feast of this very well-known day is known as Rolaeggs.

From the abundant and rich historical-artistic heritage, we highlight:

  • Tiscar Castle. It was raised in the Arab era and located in a rocky area of easy defense. The first news of the castle dates back to 876. It is a small complex with a small tower of tribute. Built in apial cane, with parts of bulkhead and the wall cloth attached to the rock. In the center there is a great rosehold called "Black Peña." In 1949 it was declared Good of Cultural Interest.
  • Sanctuary of the Virgin of Tícar. It is certainly the center of Marian devotion of the region, both for its tradition and for its location, under the "Black Peña Castle."The present construction of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Tiscar dates back to the mid-20th century, although it retains architectural remains of previous times, such as the great entrance door with pointed bow and decorated jambas, remains of the plywood of the Granadine in the sacristy of the 14th century and others that can place us at the end of the Gothic of the 16th century. The exterior of the Sanctuary maintains the original trail and on the facade the two-high swordsman. Above the main door is an image of the Virgin between two trees sculpted in relief. During the Civil War he suffered great damage, which is why the Sanctuary has been reformed.
  • Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul. It dates from the 18th century, in a neoclassical style and built on the site that had previously occupied another Gothic church of which a chapel is preserved. It has a cross floor with three ships covered with half-canyon vaults with lunetes. The entrance door with 18th-century bronze carnation and the bell tower built on an ancient medieval tower are outside.
  • Atalaya del Infante Don Enrique. The spectacular cylindrical tower of More than 10 m. of height is in the Tiscar port. Its role was to monitoring the movement of troops of the Nazari kingdom of Granada. It was built in the late 13th century by order of the Infante Don Enrique, son of Fernando III. After its restoration, a metal staircase allows us to access its interior by the original door, located about three meters in height. From its privileged situation, we can see a very important extension of the territory.
  • The Arc of Saints. Gothic door that gave entrance to the walled enclosure, built in the 14th century. The exterior shows an arch pointed with a quarry, with two novels whose right hamba is a Roman funeral stele of the third century. At the bottom is a half point brick arch with a half-barrel vault. The double arcade that it presents today could be due to the fact that the arch of half-point interior was the original of the Andalusian enclosure, remade in Christian times.
  • Roman Villa of Bruñel. This villa is a magnificent testimony of Roman domestic architecture linked to agricultural exploitation. The exceptional wealth and magnitude of Bruñel makes it a scarce model among the rural houses of this time. Originally there must have been a rather modest construction that was reformed during the second century after Christ to build an extensive complex of great decorative wealth. An urban building was designed around a large central courtyard around which the rooms are distributed, mostly with splendid mosaics and covered walls. In the fourth century, part of the house was destroyed to overcome it another with a porticated central courtyard, with a large double room to the north and another wing with a central courtyard to the east. In this last phase, although a great decorative wealth is still maintained, there is already a great ruralization of life in the villa. Their abandonment and ruin had to take place gradually during the VI and VII centuries. This villa was declared Good of Cultural Interest in 2005.

Other monuments are: The Church of Purification, known as the Chica Church, built in the 17th century with Baroque-style features and the Hermitage of San Sebastián.

Fiestas y Eventos

The following parties are held in Quesada:

  • San Sebastián. Between 19 and 21 January, the parties are held in honor of San Sebastián, patron of Quesada. On the 19th, the saint is brought from his hermitage to the people, so that the next day the three banners and the drummer, bound in ancient suits, will make five feuds of flag during the procession of the image that takes place in the afternoon. The day ends with the luminaire raised in front of the City Hall door, where the products of slaughter and wine are tasted. The parties end on the 21st, which only differs from the previous one because the flags are danced three times.

Quesada's kitchen is serrana, and therefore it is strong. Among the dishes we highlight:

Historia

In the quesada saw there are caves with rock paintings, ceramic and lytic remains that allow us to give the first human occupation of the area in the third millennium BC

During Bronze age, With the arrival of the first argaric populations these same caves and others, such as the village and necropolis of the "Corral de Quiñones," were again occupied.

Of his Roman past, Villa de Bruñel It's a clear example. It is made up of a Roman necropolis from the 1st to the 4th century, a third century villa, with patios, peristilos, impluvium and an interesting collection of mosaics. From the 4th century the remains of a Paleocrist basilica. In addition to this villa, others have been located, such as Voladero, Aguas Calientes, Allozar and the Rosales.

The current location of the city centre is attributed to the Visigoths, according to the many remains that appear in the town, such as the capitals that pull access to the garden.

It was in the cunado Arab era it acquired entity as a population core becoming within the ten most important populations of Jaén. In its texts it appears as Madinat, a fortress at the foot of a mountain with markets, bathrooms, inns and arrabal village. An excellent way to get to know one of the most beautiful and historic villages in this Natural Park is to follow in the footsteps of two illustrious poets: Antonio Machado and Miguel Hernández.

Quesada's connection with Antonio Machado stems from the fact that it is one of the places the poet visited during some of his frequent excursions to the source of the Guadalquivir river. You can follow in Machado's footsteps in a park where you'll find ceramic tiles bearing a fragment of one of his poems, and the same is true at the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Tíscar. Once there, be sure to visit the incomparable Cueva del Agua.

Quesada's link with Miguel Hernández, on the other hand, comes from the fact that his wife was born in the town. You can see how the people of Quesada cherish the poet's legacy through the Miguel Hernández-Josefina Manresa Museum and pay tribute to him through various corners linked to his memory.

Breve descripción

Baeza is located in the same geographical centre of the province of Jaén, located in the region of the Loma of which its western capital is considered.

Located near the Guadalquivir River, in a landscape of fertile land of orchards, olive groves and cereal. The absence of non-agricultural land reduces the areas of natural interest to the Guadalquivir River and the wetlands of the Lagoon Grande, of great ecological wealth and the largest in the province.

Baeza is a city where the Renaissance is shown in all its splendor, in both civil and religious monuments: palaces and churches that alternate with white houses, portades, porticos, towers, squares and fountains.

Its period of splendor dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, although the city has been outstanding since remote times.

To understand today's Baeza, we have to go back to the first inhabitants who settled in the place known as the Alcázar hill, in the Bronze Age, evolving to the Iberian city Viatia or Vivatia, passing to the Roman era, when Biatia was one of the most important cities.

It would be the Muslims who made up the city's murary limits, some of which were remade in the 16th century. After the Christian conquest the epoch of splendor of Baeza begins. The new Christian Baeza begins to grow out of the world, where religious buildings are the most representative.

  • The Cathedral. It is the most representative building in the square. In this enclave there could have been a Roman temple, over which Muslims raise a mosque and, in 1227, under the Marian advocation of the "Nativity", the cathedralicia headquarters is erected. In the 16th century, a reform is carried out, which will be the one that prints the Vandelvirian Renaissance seal to the building. The cover was drawn in 1587 by Juan Bautista Villalpando with "relief of the Nativity of the Virgin." The base of the tower is believed to be the mosque's miner, adding in time of Vandelvira the body of the bells and the deck.
  • Church of Santa Cruz. This work dates from 13th century, of late Romanesque style and preserved after the Christian conquest. The exterior is austere, highlighting its two covers with half-point arquivolts. The interior consists of three ships.
  • Ruins of the convent of San Francisco(extracamides). This work could have been one of the most important of the Andalusian Renaissance, but a number of misfortunes have prevented it, among these, the Lisbon earthquake of 1775 that brought down the vault of the major chapel. In this funeral and conventual complex, Vandelvira developed all its genius. The Latin cross church, which is accessed by a half-point arch that frames the entire cover, still remains with the relief of San Francisco and a tondo with the Virgin, which now give way to a large auditorium.
  • Old House of Correction and Prison, current City Hall(extracamides). It was built in 1520 as a prison at the request of Charles I. Since 1867 it has been home to the City Council. It is composed of the prison, with a more sober cover on which Justice and Charity are represented, and the house of the corridor with rich silver decoration. On the upper floor we find tripartite balconies with the shields of Philip II, the corridor and the city. It is topped with cornice decorated with membranes highlighted with figures. The Salon de Plenos has a Renaissance potter (horizontal and intertwined wooden ceiling) from the convent of San Antonio.
  • Church of St. Andrew. Building from the early 16th century, which held the title of a schoolgirl from 1764 to 1852. The silver-style cover, next to the square tower, stands out. The interior is a large main ship made up of arches pointed with side chapels.
  • Jabalfifth Palace. In front of the church of Santa Cruz, the Jabalfifth palace, one of the highest exponents of the isabelin Gothic style, was built in the late 15th century. The isabelin Gothic We find it on the outside, with decoration based on diamond tips, pineapple nails, fronts, florons, ties, pinacles, mocaronas and heraldic shields. The facade it is overcome with five arches of half-point Renaissance period, as well as the courtyard of the late 16th century. Today it is the seat of the Antonio Machado International University.
  • The St. Mary's Square, Baezan monumental heart, concentrates the largest number of monuments: the cathedral, the conistorial houses, the fountain of Saint Mary; the seminary of St. Philip Neri, with its picturesque facade plagued with cheers, current headquarters of the International University of Andalusia or the house-palace of Rubin de Ceballos, behind the cathedral.
  • The Populo Square, framed by the door of Jaén and the arch of Villalar, is one of the most emblematic squares of the city, where we find the plateresque cover building of the old Escribanías, today the headquarters of the tourist office of the Junta de Andalucía, the old Carnicerías and the source of the Lions in the center.

Naturaleza

Baeza is located in a dominant place in the region of the Loma and on the right bank of the Guadalquivir River. The city is located on three hills and the small valley that remain in the middle, in a rather high position over the Guadalquivir valley, a situation conducive to being a very important square in ancient times. It is surrounded by the Guadalquivir rivers to the south and Guadalimar to the north.

A site that as we walk through the walls allows us to contemplate the immense sea of olive trees that is presented to us all around us. From the sights of this walk, you can see the beautiful picture of the Guadalquivir valley, the extensive olive trees, the Cazorla saw, the Segura and Sierra Mágina saw, with the villages of Jimena, Mancha Real, Bedmar and Garciez in the distance.

The predominant vegetation is the olive tree, but next to the river and the lagoon Grande we find what we call the gallery forest: white, mimberas, tarais, black, and other species of bushes. A vegetation that with the change of the seasons draw a color brush in the landscape, especially in the autumn season.

The fauna of the town is the one of the Jienese countryside: hares, rabbits, deer, foxes, parrots, quail... They are also easy to see the storks and a wide variety of prey birds. Without forgetting the fauna that lives next to the river line and in the vicinity of the lagoon Grande.

The absence of non-agricultural land reduces areas of natural interest to the river margins and to the wetlands of the Great Lagoon with a special ecological interest.

  • Laguna Grande: This permanent lagoon that suffers significant level fluctuations, is fed from the Torres River through irrigation channels. Precisely for maintaining water during summers, this wetland is particularly important for waterbirds, it is an ideal place for food and shelter. Around the water, in addition to the vegetation of carrizos, spadañas and juncos stands out the presence of tarajes, alamos, fresnos and zarzas, where there is plenty of the visitor and I shelter the fauna of the place, among which we can mention: common fence, real anade or common porron, highlighting the fly bird, where we can see the nests of this small bird, hanging from the trees of this natural place. The locals of both the Bishop's Bridge and Baeza are willing to visit this beautiful natural site.

Fiestas y Eventos

Among the parties with the most roots among the neighbors of Baeza, we highlight:

  • La Candelariaon February 2. On the eve of the feast of the Holy One celebrates the Candelaria, typical of the blessing of the donuts of Saint Blas, protector of the throat, in the parish of El Salvador.
  • Holy Week. Between Andalusian and Spanish, the Holy Week of Baeza, declared of National Tourist Interest, stands out for the artistic richness of its steps. About 20 cofradies process through its streets and squares, in this jewel of the Andalusian Renaissance. Its creation dates back to the 16th century, when the co-fradia of the Vera Cruz, one of the oldest in Andalusia and Spain, emerged. One of the most beautiful moments of Baezan Holy Week, occurs on the morning of Good Friday, with the departure of the fellowship of Our Father Jesus Nazarene and the Cross of St. Helena, better known by the name "El Paso"; when the Nazarene Christ gives the blessing to his mother, through an articulated mechanism, when the images are crossed.
  • May CrossesMay 1. In different plazoletas and neighborhoods of the old town, altars are covered with the only theme of the exaltation of the Holy Cross.
  • Annual city fair. It is celebrated on August 15, the feast of its patron saint, Santa María del Alcázar.
  • Romeria de la Yedra. It is celebrated around the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin (8 September).

Historia

Atalaya over the Guadalquivir valley, its alcázar assured the Spanish rear in the constant threat of the Islamic kingdoms located to the west and south of Guadalquivir.

Baeza is now known for its olive production, its abundant monumental legacy (declared World Heritage by Unesco in 2003) and for hosting the International University of Andalusia.

Its main economic activity is agriculture, linked to the olive and the olive industry, although monumental tourism has developed the activity of the hotel.

Its churches, palaces and towers are a monumental set in which the different architectural styles take place, although the Renaissance and the Gothic isabelin are of particular importance. From its rich architectural heritage, it stands out the cathedral (16th century), the church of Santa Cruz (13th century), the convent of San Francisco, the City Hall and the church of San Andrés, all of the 16th century.

In short, the historic centre of Baeza is one of the most important monumental ensembles of the world renaissance.

Culture

Nature

Celebrations and Events

  • The Yedra, a pastry of Baeza, located 7 km. to the north of this, and where there is the Marian sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosel and the Holy Christ of the Yedra. The Romeria itself is celebrated on Saturday day 7, the day when the Virgin travels through the city of Baeza and goes back to her shrine of La Yedra, accompanied by horses, carriages, reels and carrots, all covered with flowers.

History

It's in the Copper age, 3rd millennium BC, when they appear the first villages. Most of them were walled and their economy was based on agriculture and livestock.

In the Iberian period, 7th century BC, the hill of the Alcázar is considered a consolidated town.

During the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, in full Roman Empire, appears in several sources as Vivatia or Biatia. It acquires great importance due to its location, as it is a mandatory step on the commercial route Catulo - Málaga.

The territory of Biatia would be occupied in the second decade of the eighth century by Muslim troops. This time the city is known as Bayyasa.

Christian kings will take the city and lose it again on several occasions. But it will be Fernando III "the Holy One" who finally conquered it in 1227, and considered it as a bridge head in the reconquest of Al-Andalus, for this reason it is given to the city of privileges and a court, the "Fuero de Cuenca."

The presence of the Catholic Church is restored, establishing in Baeza the episcopal seat in the 13th century. From this date on, the most important religious and conventual orders were present in the city.

It will be in the 16th century when Baeza reaches its maximum architectural splendor with the foundation of the University, among other public buildings of interest. The apogee will continue in the 17th century, is the century of the greatest conventional apogee.

The 18th century will be of decline. With the war of Baeza Independence, he suffers considerable human and economic losses. Excessive demands and contributions would also help. The deamortization of Mendizábal, which brought the disappearance of the convents, was very remarkable.

The mainly agricultural economy, increases production and increases the area dedicated to olive trees to the detriment of other arable crops.

In 1966Baeza was declared "Historical-Artistic Set", which was a take-off in tourism services, increased by the Declaration in 2003 by UNESCO, in Baeza as World Heritage.

University tradition is recovering with headquarters Antonio Machado of the International University of Andalusia.

Roman Villa of Bruñel

Descripción larga

Most of these buildings are based as a second residence during the High Empire, although with the crisis of the third century and the insecurity of the cities many great aristocrats withdraw to their villages. As the residence becomes, the luxury and refinement of which the rich mosaics and the beginning of the walls of the different rooms are preserved as a testimony. Next to the Palaciega area there were other units with stables, with forges, alfares and, ultimately, everything necessary to be self-sufficient away from the city. Over time, the cities lost their importance, had to wafer to avoid dangers and the cultural spotlights that had gone out.

If we know nothing about the inhabitants of these luxurious rooms, we know less about those people who left the city to take refuge in these villas. They helped defend property in exchange for being able to cultivate a piece of land with which to get what is necessary to feed. Here is the origin of what would be the vasalage in the Middle Ages. Nor do we know how the craftsmen made these great mosaics, nor their living conditions, would they know that they represented the images they reproduced with the tesels? and the last inhabitants at the end of the fourth century?

Breve descripción

The villa of Bruñel represents the typical model of Roman villa that begins to extend during the Lower Empire.
