On the night of 16 January, the eve of San Antón, bonfires are lit so the Saint will protect domestic animals.
In honour of the patron saint of farmers, a parade of floats decorated with farming tools is organised, along with horse riders dressed in flamenco costume, accompanying the saint's image during the procession, which ends with the blessing of the fields on the Paseo Nuevo. The popular open-air dance, at which the Town Hall invites attendees to enjoy the traditional snack (bread with olive oil, broad beans and salt cod), marks the end of the festival.
The "fiestasantos", the popular name for the patron saint festivities in honour of the saints Bonoso and Maximiano, has been held since the 17th century. On 11 August, the ringing of the "campanica turrón" bell announces its start; a sound repeated at the same time every day to gather children, who collect sweets thrown down from the bell tower. On the 21st, the images of the saints and the urn containing their relics are carried in procession; along the way, brotherhood members, dressed in morning coats, white shirts, red ties and a distinctive two-pointed hat, "cast the flag" of the martyrs (covering the people of Arjona with it for protection).
The old livestock fair, held since the 18th century, has become an agricultural machinery exhibition, and the only festival in Arjona that is not centred on a religious figure. On the weekend closest to 15 September, locals enjoy two days in which singing and dancing take centre stage.
